May 2002 Advanced Hostage Negotiation Certification A Success!
The Campbell Police Department hosted an Advanced Hostage Negotiation Certification course from Tuesday, May 21 to Friday, May 24, 2002. This is a 32-hour course, and is approved by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA). Survivewise, who is also OPOTA approved, taught the class. The Survivewise instructors are all active hostage negotiators, and are extensively experienced, with a combined total of over 200 negotiation situations under their belt. Together, they brought their experience and expertise to the class with intense individual training, while teaching the state required material.
The class also performed hostage negotiation scenarios which assisted in hands-on experience with the negotiation process. These scenarios involved an armed, escaped convict gone mobile, and an individual barricaded in his vehicle attempting to commit suicide.
